Internet Business Blog

Nowadays you can build blogs using various platforms and mostly for FREE. What’s the difference between them?
To answer this question we need to put wordpress.org in one basket and wordpress.com and blogspot com in the other one.
Blogging Websites
As an introduction, it is worth mentioning that Google loves WordPress :). It’s because it works really well with internet browsers. It is practical, easy to use and you can use it for building blogs or static sites. WordPress is extremely popular, that is also why it is constantly improved and its functionality increases all the time.
There is, however, huge difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com or blogspot com.

WordPress.org
This is free software, which everyone can use to build self-hosted blogs or websites. In this case you need to have your own domain name and hosting arranged.

  • When you build such blog or website you’ve got full control over them. You decide about the theme, skins, fonts, colors. You can install plugins, add google analytics code, pinglist, you can set up your own permalinks structure and make any changes in the source code you like. All these adjustments can be done with the thought of having excellent SEO, of increasing functionality of your blog and making it perfectly fit for you or your client you build blog for.
  • What’s more self-hosted blogs or static websites are quite easy to use and install, especially when you have Cpanel hosting. It means you get different Control Panels for each website or blog you want to host. I use Hostgator and they provide such option, as well as Fantastico option, which greatly automates the process of wordpress installation.
  • Of course, such a blog or static website is your property, you can rent it or sell it anytime you want.

WordPress.com or Blogspot com
These are platforms, where you can build your blog for free. Hosting and the domain name are already provided for you. Such a blog doesn’t belong to you, it belongs to WordPress or Google, which obviously gives you much less control over it. You can’t sell the blog or static website and you have to obey the rules of using WordPress or Google platforms for blogging.  When you build links and increase Page Rank of such blog, you do it for the platform provider. Obviously you invest in their property.

Does it mean that blogs built on wordpress.com or blogspot com are not worth your time?
Of course not!
My sneaky tip is to use them as a part of an internet marketing strategy to build backlinks to your self-hosted blogging websites ;).

    Hi Justyna
    how sneaky are you…
“My sneaky tip is to use them as a part of an internet marketing strategy to build backlinks to your self-hosted blogging websites”
    Never thought of that.
At the moment my Wordpress.org site takes up all my time and the great thing is that I can make changes whenever I like… provided I know how to do it.
Thanks for looking at the three choices – something to think about.

Sorry for a second comment Justyna but I meant to say something about the sexy bookmarks plugin that you use.
Would you recommend it? Heard someone say that it slows down the page load speed.
If you do recommend it, how about a post on how to set it up?

      Hi Keith,
you are always welcome to comment here!! And thanks for your great feedback 🙂

As for the sexybookmarks, it all depends how many plugins you already have, too many will slow down loading your website. Sexybookmarks is one of those useful and really nice plugins I use on most of my blogs and I haven’t noticed any significant changes in the page load speed. What I recommend to you is to check if you need all the plugins you have installed and also consider storing images, audio, video files on AmazonS3. It is a great, reliable and very cheap storage system and really cool solution for increasing your page load speed.
Sure, I can make a post on how to set Sexybookmarks up.

Definitely wordpress! You have soooo many more options with wordpress its not even funny! Plus, you can’t host your own blogspot. With wordpress you can manage your own hosting and not worry about 3rd parties.

If someone ask me to whether he or she should use a free blog or a selfhosting blog. I will advice him to do practice at free blog and implement your result at self hosting blog.

    What you think about it.

Having a free blog on Wordpress.com and learning how to operate it is definitely a great way to get the skills to manage Wordpress.org blog.
